Django 101 comes to Camelot
“Django 101” is on, 7.30pm Sunday July 24th at Camelot, 19 Marrickville Road (cnr Railway Parade).
Guitarist Paul Bulanyi is joined on stage by Eddie Bronson (accordion and sax), Ana Okunev (violin), Cameron Jones and Jose Zarb (rhythm guitars), Chris Frater (clarinet and sax), Geoff Speed (clarinet), Odile Lejus (double bass), Lawrence Pastro (drums) and Max Thrower (narrator) to celebrate the 101st birthday of the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.
“Django 101” pays tribute to Reinhardt’s musical life; his seminal influence on jazz guitar, his pioneering role in all string jazz ensemble playing and his achievements as a composer. The concert covers his musical work from the early days of Bal Musette and Gypsy Waltzes, on to his collaboration with Stephane Grapelli in the Quintette of the Hot Club of France, through his dazzling success in France during the Second World War and into his startling post war pieces.
Django’s musical journey is highlighted by a brief and compelling narration between songs and by the use of historic stills. Not to be missed. Django’s oeuvre was wide and the man’s idiosynchratic, dreamlike life is fascinating.
Doors open at 6.30pm. $25 at door, $20 concession. $20 online camelotlounge.com. Licenced venue, yummy pizza!
